Computer Science 100 - Homework 3: Internships

Assigned: Monday, February 26

Due: Monday, March 5 in class

Evaluation:

Instructions: For this exercise only, you may work in teams of two if you wish. There should be no more than two people on each team, and each team should turn in only one submission with both student names.

Use the worldwide web to find information about an internship or cooperative experience (co-op) that would be appropriate for a Truman State University computer science major. The internship/co-op should be with one of the specific companies, government agencies or not-for-profit organizations listed below or something similar. Once you have identified an organization, answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to answer the questions using complete sentences.

  1. Choose an organization (such as one of the following) and then list the name and website URL of the organization.
  2. Find an advertisement for an internship at the organization you selected in step 1 that would be appropriate for a student who is a computer science major and would meet the requirements of a computer science capstone. What is the name of the internship or cooperative experience?
  3. What is the physical location of the internship/co-op (city and state)?
  4. What is(are) the background requirement(s) of the internship/co-op, if any? (For example, you may be required to have completed a specific year in college, have a specific G.P.A. or a certain major.) List all the requirements. The requirements may be divided into two categories: basic and preferred. If so, list both types.
  5. Locate the description of the internship/co-op. The description should contain a list of the tasks and responsibilities the intern will be required to perform during the internship. List all of the responsibilities.
  6. Is the internship paid or unpaid?
  7. Does the internship provide housing? (Answer either "yes", "no" or "cannot tell from advertisement".) Does the internship provide any of the following: housing allowance/stipend, relocation allowance/stipend, moving expenses?
  8. Is the internship available as co-operative experience? (Answer either "yes", "no" or "cannot tell from advertisement".)
  9. Using your knowledge of Truman's computer science curriculum and your four-year plan, determine when (the semester and year) you will have the minimum qualifications for this internship.

What to turn in: When you have found the answers to all the questions above, write your answers using a word processing program of some sort and print the results. Be sure your name(s) is/are on the top of the sheet.
